Le nom est surtout porté dans le Finistère. Variantes : Malléjacq, Maléjac, Maléjacq. Comme l'indique la finale -ac, il devrait renvoyer à un toponyme désignant un ancien domaine gallo-romain, reste à savoir où celui-ci se trouve. Il y a bien un hameau qui se nomme Malijac, mais il se trouve dans le Vaucluse (Lapalud). Albert Deshayes (voir bibliographie) propose la commune de Malansac (56), en s'appuyant sur une graphie "Mallechac" rencontrée en 1160 (forme citée au XVIIIe siècle par dom Morice).
